Tucked ★★★★☆ | Movie Review

Synopsis

An ageing drag queen forms an unlikely friendship with a young new queen at the club she works in.

Review

Jackie is the mainstay performer at a little club, she dresses to impress and then knocks the punters dead with her comedy. Her fun ends there though, Jackie goes home to Jack's quiet flat with just the radio for company.

At his ripe old age, with his smoking and drinking, Jack's body isn't quite as sturdy as Jackie would have you believe, and when things catch up with him he ends up in hospital getting news no one wants to hear.

Jackie goes back to work, after all, why slow down and stop enjoying yourself? When Faith turns up to join the line-up the duo connect and take on a rollercoaster few weeks together taking on the world.

The whole film was only 79 minutes long, a surprisingly short film and yet it felt a lot longer. Normally saying that would be a bad thing but I genuinely didn't feel like I lost interest at all.

While there were a few different characters in Tucked it really did stay focused on Jack/Jackie and his friendship with Faith. The pair work off each other well, both stubborn for their own reasons, lonely but too proud to do anything about it.

I was surprised that I got so far in but wasn't feeling much emotion from anything, I even wrote that in my notes, but seconds later I realised I spoke too soon. Once Faith learns of Jack's illness (which was actually quite a funny scene considering) and the pair start trying to live for today you become much more invested in their relationship.

The feel of the film is very natural. With lots of moments happening at night you'd expect there to be issues with lighting but it's all handled well. In particular there's a scene where Jackie pulls over her car to have a cigarette, the street light illuminates the bold make-up and captures everything perfectly.

Tucked is a nice little film and covers so many different issues, none of which are seen or treated as trivial. Sadly this didn't get much time on our screens and I wouldn't be surprised if some people hadn't even heard about it.

What you should do

This won't be to everyone's taste, but if the idea even slightly intrigues you then I'd recommend seeing it.

Movie thing you wish you could take home

Some fierce make-up tips or lessons on how to walk in high heels probably.
