Inevitably there is a film that sneaks up on you and you're left wondering how you might have missed it. It's a very eclectic bunch I've picked out. When I left the screen after seeing them these five films left me with something that I hadn't expected at all.
It has to be Sgt Stubby that gets the top spot here.
To get such an amazing film out of such a harrowing story, that is also suitable for children, is nothing short of pure genius. Everything was thought about down to the smallest detail to create this wonderful film that will be woefully underseen.
The Nominees
Crazy Rich Asians - This one really was a bolt out of the blue. It was listed as an upcoming release but had no description, no picture, and usually that means that it isn't something we'll get to see. But suddenly the chatter from across the pond was that CRA was a hit and everyone was raving about it. That raving wasn't misplaced. This was a rom-com the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time and it genuinely brought a smile to my face.
The First Purge - To me the rest of this franchise just looks like a lot of violence for the sake of it. I can't say that I was particularly looking forward to it, but you know what I'm like I went anyway. I was really surprised that I enjoyed it so much, and I think that is mainly to do that it was the origin story of the series. There was an actual story that played out quite well and you got to see it from all sides.
Green Book - While I'd seen this on the listings I wouldn't have been able to tell you what it was about, so to get it as a Secret Screening was almost a little disappointing. That disappointment didn't last though. It was a wonderful film created from something that makes you uneasy to think was a true story. To be able to deliver the important messages as well as present us with something that was surprisingly funny was an incredible achievement.
Searching - I don't think I've seen something with this sort of set up before, if I have it really didn't have any sort of an impact on me. The video calls, the online and text chats all brought you closer into the story and made you feel like you were right there with John Cho's character trying to work out what had happened to his daughter. It was a brilliantly immersive style.
Sgt Stubby - I had ignored this one in the listings for quite a while. It did the rounds repeatedly as a Movies 4 Juniors screening and I had just assumed that it was an old film I'd never heard of. On a whim when I was bored one morning I went to see it and I was blown away. The story is obviously quite a bleak one being set in the war but it is told in such a way that you don't see that side of it, you see the comraderie.
