23 new releases that have some potential behind them this May! Four of which I'm quite excited about. Click on the titles below to view the trailers.
Which of May releases are you looking forward to the most?
The Curse of La Llorona - Starring Linda Cardellini. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.
Well, after The Prodigy I think I'm a no for horror in the cinema from now on!
A Dog's Journey - Starring Dennis Quaid and Josh Gad. A dog finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he meets.
I was crying at the trailer so I'll be a wreck when it comes to the actual film.
★ Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile - Starring Zac Efron and Lily Collins. The story of Ted Bundy from the perspective of Elizabeth Kloepfer, his longtime girlfriend.
Lots of talk around this one and I do enjoy new takes on true crime stories so I'm looking forward to this one.
★ Hotel Mumbai - Starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer and Jason Isaacs. The true story of the Taj Hotel terrorist attack in Mumbai and the people who risked their lives to protect themselves and their families.
I imagine that this one is going to be a powerful watch, the teaser trailer has got me hooked already.
The Hummingbird Project - Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård and Salma Hayek. A pair of traders go up against their old boss in an attempt to make a fortune on a new deal.
It's got the feel of something a little kooky but looks like it could be good, seeing Alexander Skarsgård like this physically hurts though... potentially we'll need to line up one of his other films afterwards to balance it out.
Long Shot - Starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. When Fred reunites with his first crush Charlotte he charms her, one of the most influential women in the world. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly.
Crazy would be one way to describe this one. I honestly don't know what else to say about it.
Tolkien - Starring Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins. A look at the formative years of the author as he finds friendship, love and inspiration at school.
Hmm, some films I just don't think need to be made, the trailer makes it just look like Lord Of The Rings without the fantasy.
Vox Lux - Starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law. An unusual set of circumstances brings unexpected success to a pop star.
I watched the trailer, I still have no idea.
Destination Wedding - Starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. Two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests develop a relationship.
I was quite amused by the trailer, I'll definitely be looking out for this in the cinema.
High Life - Starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche and... André Benjamin...? A father and his daughter struggle to survive in deep space where they live in isolation.
Colour me intrigued about Andre 3000 being in this one. Well, that trailer is another weird one!
The Hustle - Starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. Two scam artists of very different standards team up to go after the men who have wronged them.
I'm hoping that the potential for funny doesn't get lost in some overacting, it's either going to be really good or really bad.
The Intruder - Starring Dennis Quaid, Meagan Good and Michael Ealy. A young married couple buys a beautiful house on several acres of land only to find that the man they bought it from refuses to let go of the property.
Dennis Quaid is going from animal lover to psycho this month, an interesting contrast.
★ Pokémon Detective Pikachu - Starring Ryan Reynolds, Suki Waterhouse and Justice Smith. In a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective.
Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu? Yeah, I'm not missing this one.
Breakthrough - Starring Sam Trammell, Topher Grace and Chrissy Metz. When her son drowns in a lake, a faithful mother prays for him to come back from the brink of death and be healed.
Based on a true story, the trailer/featurette makes for an intriguing introduction to the film.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - Starring Keanu Reeves and so many other people. Super-Assassin John Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassin's guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head - he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.
Everyone against John Wick? Is that even a contest?
My Days of Mercy - Starring Ellen Page and Kate Mara. The daughter of a man on death row falls in love with a woman on the opposing side of her family's political cause.
There wasn't a lot in the trailer that caught my eye, but the idea and cast look good.
Aladdin - Starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott and Will Smith. A live action version of the Disney animated classic.
I'll be seeing this, that's a given, but I'm not overly enthusiastic for the film. That's the trouble when you remake something that's a classic like this. The music however does hold some excitement for me, I heard A Whole New World the other day and it gave goosebumps so I'm hoping the soundtrack will be its redeeming feature.
Ad Astra - Starring Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland. Astronaut Roy McBride travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet.
Doing this post is the first time I've heard of this film. It's got an impressive set of names against it but very little else seems to be available about it. The release date was already pushed so I'm uncertain as to whether this will actually come out in May.
Rocketman - Starring Taron Egerton, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard. A musical fantasy about the fantastical human story of Elton John's breakthrough years.
Hmm... I would like this to be as impressive as Bohemian Rhapsody was the trailer is making it look a little trippy. We'll just have to wait and see.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 - Patton Oswalt, Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart. Continuing the story of Max and his friends.
It's going to more of the same isn't it? I'd be happy with a film full of advert length clips, the snippets have a tendency to be more entertaining than the whole thing.
★ Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Starring Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Charles Dance, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. The crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters.
I love original Godzilla facing off with monsters. Please don't ruin this.
Ma - Starring Octavia Spencer. A lonely woman befriends a group of teenagers and decides to let them party at her house.
IMDb has done Octavia Spencer wrong with their listing, right there on the poster, main character, yet reduced to "all cast" on the app. Their STARmeter needs junking. Spencer is amazing in everything she does, but I'm not sure I'm ready to see her as creepy rather than funny.
Support the Girls - Starring Regina Hall and Haley Lu Richardson. The general manager at a highway-side ''sports bar with curves" has her incurable optimism and faith, in her girls, her customers, and herself, tested over the course of a long, strange day.
Even having watched the trailer I'm not entirely sure what the story is, but Regina Hall is always a draw for me.
Happy watching!
