UK Movie Releases - October 2019

October promises to be an interesting month, though surprisingly few horror movies appear on the list. A few of these are popping up at the London Film Festival at the beginning of the month so I'm going to try and sneak them in early.

Which of October's releases are you looking forward to the most?

4th October 2019

Joker - Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz and Robert De Niro. An original standalone origin story of the iconic villain not seen before on the big screen.

Whatever way you look at it this is going to be an interesting watch. I can't say that I had any strong feelings about it either way but after having seen the last trailer on the big screen I was feeling encouraged. It's got the internet buzzing so much that it's joined my muted words list.

Judy - Starring Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley and Rufus Sewell. Legendary performer Judy Garland arrives in London in the winter of 1968 to perform a series of sold-out concerts.

I'm not sure that I'm overly fussed about another music related film but hearing Somewhere Over The Rainbow sung in the trailer was beautiful so I'm here for it.

11th October 2019

★ Abominable - Starring Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai and Tenzing Norgay Trainor. A magical Yeti must return to his family.

Magical is the right word for this one, the trailer looks adorable. I can't wait to see this.

★ The Day Shall Come - Starring Anna Kendrick, Kayvan Novak, Jim Gaffigan. An impoverished preacher who brings hope to the Miami projects is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fueling his madcap revolutionary dreams.

"It's just the horn they use to summon the dinosaurs!" This looks a little mad but the trailers have started showing and I can't deny I'm entertained.

★ Gemini Man - Starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Will Smith. A hitman faces off against an enemy that's all too familiar to him.

Gemini Man looks like an interesting story with some slightly dubious anti-ageing in the trailer but the main reason I'm looking forward to this is because it has Jerry Bruckheimer as a producer. I don't think there's anything I've seen of his that I haven't liked, most of my favourite 80s and 90s movies have him onboard and a lot of TV series too.

18th October 2019

Farmageddon: A Shaun The Sheep Movie - When an alien with amazing powers crash-lands near Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun the Sheep goes on a mission to shepherd the intergalactic visitor home before a sinister organization can capture her.

More Shaun The Sheep... I'm in.

Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil - Starring Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning. Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and dark new forces at play.

I can't deny looking forward to this but part of me just longs for something that's new.

Official Secrets - Starring Keira Knightley, Matt Smith and Ralph Fiennes. The true story of a British whistleblower who leaked information to the press about an illegal NSA spy operation designed to push the UN Security Council into sanctioning the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

This looks like it could be a good film, but I can't help but think I'd rather see something from real life that's a little more fun... like a puppy going for a walk... I'd watch that for two hours.

The Peanut Butter Falcon - Starring Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and Zack Gottsagen. Zak runs away from his care home to make his dream of becoming a wrestler come true.

The trailer for this looks like it's got a lot of chances for some really heartwarming moments and I'm looking forward to this one.

★ Zombieland: Double Tap - Starring Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin. Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock move to the American heartland as they face off against evolved zombies, fellow survivors, and the growing pains of the snarky makeshift family.

The trailer just looks nuts, and I could do with a zombie movie that's better than The Dead Don't Die.

23rd October 2019

★ Terminator: Dark Fate - Starring Mackenzie Davis, Edward Furlong, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sarah Connor and a hybrid cyborg human must protect a young girl from a newly modified liquid Terminator from the future.

After seeing Terminator (for the first time) and T2: Judgement Day on the big screen in August I am really excited to be seeing this one, and it doesn't hurt that the trailer looks epic.

25th October 2019

★ The Addams Family - Starring Charlize Theron, Finn Wolfhard, Chloë Grace Moretz and Oscar Isaac. An animated version of Charles Addams' series of cartoons about a peculiar, ghoulish family.

It would need to do a lot to hold up against the original Addams Family but it still looks like it has potential.

Black And Blue - Starring Naomie Harris and Tyrese Gibson. A rookie cop inadvertently captures the murder of a young drug dealer on her body cam. After realizing that the murder was committed by corrupt cops, she must team up with the one person from her community who is willing to help her as she tries to escape both the criminals and the police.

Unlike most of the other things on this list I haven't heard anything about this one. The trailer looks good though so hopefully this will get some screen time.

The Last Black Man In San Francisco - Starring Jimmie Fails, Jonathan Majors and Rob Morgan. A young man searches for home in the changing city that seems to have left him behind.

When I see A24 come up before a film starts I get nervous, I feel really dubious about what they produce. They made The Children Act which was stunning and The Farewell looks like it's going to be good, but they've also made Mid90s and Midsommar... so... yeah, we'll see.

31st October 2019

Doctor Sleep - Starring Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson and Jacob Tremblay. Years following the events of "The Shining," a now-adult Dan Torrance meets a young girl with similar powers as his and tries to protect her from a cult known as The True Knot who prey on children with powers to remain immortal.

I'm going to have to get round to watching The Shining!

Happy watching!
