Review

Honestly, who cares about the storyline? I was here for the floofs and inner monologues.

I decided to write down in my notes every time I cried, so here's the condensed version:

😢😢😭😢😢😢😭😢😢😭😢😢😭😢😭 [< long continued blubbing] 😭😭😭

The title cards on movies usually tell you things like "mild threat" and "bloody violence", A Dog's Journey's said "emotional scenes". It might just as well said blub-fest.

This is a follow-up to A Dog's Purpose and it has a very similar progression. Bailey Bailey Bailer has lived a full life with Ethan and Hannah and got to see their granddaughter CJ start to grow and become a little adventurer. But a rift in the family sees Gloria take CJ away so she can have a life off the farm, everything changes.

As Bailey prepares to start his next life he promises Ethan that he'll find CJ and make sure that she's okay, no matter what it takes. And so A Dog's Journey begins.

It's exactly what you want it to be, it's predictable, but sometimes you just need a good cry.

We see CJ's life unfold with lots of false starts, each incident is handled quite well and the film plods along nicely.

As I said, I'm just here for the dogs' inner monologue. Josh Gad was an amazing choice for that. His tone is full of optimism and has all the upbeat joy you expect from a pupper. My favourite incarnation was probably Big Dog.

Dear Dog, I'm crying just thinking about it... alright, this review needs to end.

What you should do

It's not a masterpiece but it's heartwarming, and if we ignore whatever ageing technique they used on Dennis Quaid and Marg Helgenberger, it's a delightful (and emotional) film. If you don't like ugly crying in public then wait until it's streaming.

Movie thing you wish you could take home

Erm, floofs, obvs!
