19 films listed for August, and five of them have really caught my eye... the month will definitely be starting off with a bang though.
Which of the August releases are you looking forward to the most?
★ Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba. Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity.
Genetically enhanced Idris Elba... Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham and cheeky banter... The first trailer looks amazing and I've just watched the second one... This is really going to kick start August.
★ The Angry Birds 2 - Starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and lots of others. Birds and pigs must come together against a new enemy.
You might think, why is she giving Angry Birds 2 a star... The original is one of my go to films when I want something amusing that doesn't tax my brain, and I'm hoping that this second instalment will be just as fun.
The Art Of Racing In The Rain - Starring Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried and Milo Ventimiglia. A dog named Enzo recalls the life lessons he has learned from his race car driving owner, Denny.
A cute floof in a movie... and a sport related one at that... count me in.
Blinded By The Light - Starring Viveik Kalra. In 1987 during the austere days of Thatcher's Britain, a teenager learns to live life, understand his family and find his own voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen.
Another film in the recent influx of music-related ones, Springsteen isn't quite in my area of knowledge but I'm interested to see this take on everything.
Playmobil: The Movie - Animated feature film inspired by the Playmobil brand toys.
Potentially we've got some LEGO-like fun to have here.
The Sun Is Also A Star - Starring Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton. A hopeless romantic ambivalent about his future in medical school falls for a hard-luck young woman who doesn't believe in love.
Based on Nicola Yoon's novel of the same name, she's also the author that brought us Everything, Everything. You'll recognise Shahidi from Black-ish and Melton from Riverdale and the duo look to have good chemistry in the trailer. All of these things together hopefully mean we're in for an interesting film, and probably one with some crying involved.
JT LeRoy - Starring Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern and Jim Sturgess. A young woman named Savannah Knoop spends six years pretending to be the celebrated author JT LeRoy, the made-up literary persona of her sister-in-law.
An interesting looking story, I would imagine it'll be a small release if it appears on our screens. There's also a documentary about JT LeRoy on Amazon Prime.
★ Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood - Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. A faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.
The latest Tarantino offering, full of the usual stars you'd expect.
Dora And The Lost City Of Gold - Starring Isabela Moner, Benicio Del Toro, Eva Longoria, Danny Trejo and Michael Peña. Dora, a teenage explorer, leads her friends on an adventure to save her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost city of gold.
This knocked up a notch Dora looks like it should be fun. Lots of great actors, all led by Isabela Moner who we recently saw in Instant Family. I'm hoping for some good adventure along the lines of Jumanji.
Good Boys - Three sixth grade boys ditch school and embark on an epic journey while carrying accidentally stolen drugs, being hunted by teenage girls, and trying to make their way home in time for a long-awaited party.
I hadn't heard about this until doing this post, there are a couple of amusing things in the trailer but I'm not too bothered about this one.
UglyDolls - An animated adventure in which the free-spirited UglyDolls confront what it means to be different, struggle with a desire to be loved, and ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most.
I'm expecting something with a lot of life lessons in it, and probably some rather sickly sweet moments, but hopefully it'll be some good family fun.
★ Angel Has Fallen - Starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman. Secret Service Agent Mike Banning is framed for the attempted assassination of the President and must evade his own agency and the FBI as he tries to uncover the real threat.
Just, yes... that's all you need to know.
★ Crawl - Starring Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper and Ross Anderson. A young woman, while attempting to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped in a flooding house and must fight for her life against alligators.
Creature feature AND natural disaster?! Get me a ticket now!
Pain And Glory - Starring Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. A film director reflects on the choices he's made in life as past and present come crashing down around him.
A Spanish language offering, I imagine that I won't get to see this which is a shame because it was very popular at Cannes.
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark - Starring Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza and Gabriel Rush. A group of teens face their fears in order to save their lives.
It's a no from me.
The Informer - Starring Joel Kinnaman and Rosamund Pike. An ex-convict working undercover intentionally gets himself incarcerated again in order to infiltrate the mob at a maximum security prison.
Also starring Clive Owen and Common, there looks to be some good action in this one.
The Mustang - Starring Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Mitchell and Bruce Dern. The story of Roman Coleman, a violent convict, who is given the chance to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program involving the training of wild mustangs.
Interesting looking trailer, I'm interested to see if this shows up anywhere to watch.
My Spy - Starring Dave Bautista, Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong. A hardened CIA operative finds himself at the mercy of a precocious 9-year-old girl, having been sent undercover to surveil her family.
This looks like it could be amusing, it could also be The Pacifier, but watching Bautista take a dodgeball to the head... I'm sold.
The Souvenir - Starring Honor Swinton Byrne, Tilda Swinton and Tom Burke. A young film student in the early 80s becomes romantically involved with a complicated and untrustworthy man.
I don't think I've seen a trailer that has intrigued me less than this one did... and there seems to be a part two to this filming? What?
Happy watching!
